Learning How to Love

…the miracle… means that you have understood that dreams are dreams; and that escape depends, not on the dream, but only on awaking. Could it be some dreams are kept, and others wakened from? The choice is not between which dreams to keep, but only if you want to live in dreams or to awaken from them. Thus it is the miracle does not select some dreams to leave untouched by its beneficence. You cannot dream some dreams and wake from some, for you are either sleeping or awake. And dreaming goes with only one of these.

The dreams you think you like would hold you back as much as those in which the fear is seen. For every dream is but a dream of fear, no matter what the form it seems to take. The fear is seen within, without, or both. Or [fear] can be disguised in pleasant form. But never is it absent from the dream, for fear is the material of dreams, from which they all are made.

The core of dreams the Holy Spirit gives is never one of fear. The coverings may not appear to change, but what they mean has changed because they cover something else. …A shadow figure who attacks becomes a brother giving you a chance to help, if this becomes the function of the dream. It is helpful to remember that the Holy Spirit recognizes only Love or calls for Love. Dreams with its shadow figures of fear are recognized as calls for Love. Thus the Holy Spirit gives a new purpose to dreams of fear by answering them with His loving helpfulness.

This new purpose makes every moment an opportunity to demonstrate the reality of Love. This is the miracle that transforms dreams of fear to happy dreams of joining with the Love in our brothers. From the happy dream of Love welcomed through forgiveness, waking to our Home in the Heaven of God’s Love is the natural outcome.

Let us join today in the practice of asking the Holy Spirit to teach us how to Love.

The Safety of God’s Love

‘I am sustained by the Love of God.’ Here is the answer to every problem that will confront you, today and tomorrow and throughout time. In this world, you believe you are sustained by everything but God.

Only the Love of God will protect you in all circumstances. It will lift you out of every trial, and raise you high above all the perceived dangers of this world into a climate of perfect peace and safety. It will transport you into a state of mind that nothing can threaten, nothing can disturb, and where nothing can intrude upon the eternal calm of the Son of God.

Through the Love of God within you, you can resolve all seeming difficulties without effort and in sure confidence. Tell yourself this often today.

…let [I am sustained by the Love of God] sink deep into your consciousness. Repeat it, think about it, let related thoughts come to help you recognize its truth, and allow peace to flow over you like a blanket of protection and surety. Imagine what it would feel like to be in a cocoon of Light, which allows Love to flow freely to and through you, while preventing any harm from coming to you. This cocoon is the eternal, changeless Love of God. It keeps us safe and meets our only need — to Love and be Loved.

This is the Home our Father created for us. In this cocoon we experience perfect peace because we are certain no harm can come to us. We are certain that our only Reality is God’s joy and love and peace.

Welcoming Lessons in Love

Humility will never ask that you remain content with littleness. But it does require that you be not content with less than greatness that comes not of you. Your difficulty with the holy instant arises from your fixed conviction that you are not worthy of it. And what is this but the determination to be as you would make yourself? God did not create His dwelling place unworthy of Him. And if you believe He cannot enter where He wills to be, you must be interfering with His Will. You do not need the strength of willingness to come from you, but only from His Will.

The holy instant does not come from your little willingness alone. It is always the result of your small willingness combined with the unlimited power of God’s Will. You have been wrong in thinking that it is needful to prepare yourself for Him.

In preparing for the holy instant, do not attempt to make yourself holy to be ready to receive it. That is but to confuse your role with God’s. Atonement cannot come to those who think that they must first atone, but only to those who offer it nothing more than simple willingness to make way for it. Purification is of God alone, and therefore for you. Rather than seek to prepare yourself for Him, try to think thus:

I who am host to God am worthy of Him.
He Who established His dwelling place in me created it as He would have it be.
It is not needful that I make it ready for Him, but only that I do not interfere with His plan to restore to me my own awareness of my readiness, which is eternal.
I need add nothing to His plan.
But to receive it, I must be willing not to substitute my own in place of it. (A Course in Miracles, T-18.IV.3:1-4:3;5:4-13. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

We do not have to work to achieve holiness. We only need to accept the holiness that God gave us when He created His Son one with Him. Our true Self is God’s Son. The world we see is a dream of being different from what God created. It is an attempt to usurp the Will of God and make our own world. This dream makes our holiness invisible to us. Yet it remains our only Reality.

We reclaim our Reality by being willing to receive the Holy Spirit’s lessons in Truth. Our willingness to be taught is all that is needed. The Holy Spirit’s lessons in Truth are empowered by the limitless strength of God’s Love. Let us be willing today, to welcome the Holy Spirit’s lessons in Love.

Love Is the Only Real Value

You have the right to all the universe; to perfect peace, complete deliverance from all effects of sin, and to the life eternal, joyous and complete in every way, as God appointed for His holy Son. This is the only justice Heaven knows, and all the Holy Spirit brings to earth. Your special function shows you nothing else but perfect justice can prevail for you. And you are safe from vengeance in all forms. The world deceives, but it cannot replace God’s justice with a version of its own. For only love is just, and can perceive what justice must accord the Son of God. Let love decide, and never fear that you, in your unfairness, will deprive yourself of what God’s justice has allotted you.

Unless you think that all your brothers have an equal right to miracles with you, you will not claim your right to them because you were unjust to one with equal rights. Seek to deny and you will feel denied. Seek to deprive, and you have been deprived. A miracle can never be received because another could receive it not. Only forgiveness offers miracles. Love is just because Love does not condemn. Love sees all that is real as equal to Itself because only Love is real. This is the foundation of miracles. Miracles restore the mind to its natural state as Love.

Because Love sees only Itself, knowing nothing else exists, it sees only innocence, no cause for judgment. Love’s perfect oneness excludes nothing except the unreal. What is unreal does not exist.

While we are engaged in the ego thought system of separation, we cannot be just because we cannot see equality. The ego is the belief that inequality is true, making justice impossible in the ego’s view. On our own we cannot be just because the belief that we are on our own denies the equality of Love. But we have the Holy Spirit in our mind Who teaches only perfect justice. He teaches that only Love is real. Justice comes as we lay aside the values of the ego and welcome Love, the only real value.

Accepting the Gift of Life in God

Living is joy, but death can only weep. You see in death escape from what you made. But this you do not see; that you made death, and it is but illusion of an end. Death cannot be escape, because it is not life in which the problem lies. Life has no opposite, for it is God. Life and death seem to be opposites because you have decided death ends life. Forgive the world, and you will understand that everything that God created cannot have an end, and nothing He did not create is real. In this one sentence is our course explained. In this one sentence is our practicing given its one direction. And in this one sentence is the Holy Spirit’s whole curriculum specified exactly as it is.

What is the peace of God? No more than this; the simple understanding that His Will is wholly without opposite. There is no thought that contradicts His Will, yet can be true. The contrast between His Will and yours but seemed to be reality. In truth there was no conflict, for His Will is yours. Now is the mighty Will of God Himself His gift to you. He does not seek to keep it for Himself. Why would you seek to keep your tiny frail imaginings apart from Him? The Will of God is One and all there is. This is your heritage. The universe beyond the sun and stars and all the thoughts of which you can conceive, belongs to you. God’s peace is the condition for His Will. Attain His peace, and you remember Him. (A Course in Miracles, M-20.5-6)

“Forgive the world” means to let go of the wish to have an identity separate from God. It is this wish that has made the illusion of a world of separate bodies and separate things. Only in illusions of separation can there be appearances of conflict. Within the oneness of God’s Love, all is changeless Love. There can be no differences that conflict. Without conflict, we are filled with peace. There is no other state.

It could be said that God’s peace is His last Will and Testament. It is His first and only Will. He has willed all of Himself to be given His Creation, His Son. This is our true Self. By forgiving the world, we clear away the veil that has hidden our true Self from our awareness. We awaken to the peace of God, our natural state. We accept our Inheritance, willed to us by our Father. We have let go of trying to disinherit ourselves from the gift of Life we share with God.

Remembering We Are at Home in Heaven

God does not suffer conflict. Nor is His creation split in two. How could it be His Son could be in hell, when God Himself established him in Heaven? Could he lose what the Eternal Will has given him to be his home forever? Let us not try longer to impose an alien will upon God’s single purpose. He is here because He wills to be, and what He wills is present now, beyond the reach of time.

[God’s Son] thinks he made a hell opposing Heaven, and believes that he abides in what does not exist, while Heaven is the place he cannot find.

Leave foolish thoughts like these behind today, and turn your mind to true ideas instead. No one can fail who seeks to reach the truth, and it is truth we seek to reach today. …we will ask to see the rising of the real world to replace the foolish images that we hold dear, with true ideas arising in the place of thoughts that have no meaning, no effect, and neither source nor substance in the truth.

Remember often that today should be a time of special gladness, and refrain from dismal thoughts and meaningless laments. …remind yourself with this:

Today I seek and find all that I want.
My single purpose offers it to me.

Our single purpose is God’s single purpose — to be and extend Love eternally. To seek the Truth is to seek and accept the Will of God. There is no sacrifice in this. God’s Will for His Son is perfect happiness and Love without end. To give up a loveless world where true happiness is impossible for the glad exchange of Heaven is not sacrifice. We give up nothing to gain everything, all that is Real.

Today as we look upon the world and think about all the things we need to do today, let us remind ourselves that beyond the appearances of the world is the eternal Love that is our purpose to receive and give. Heaven is here and now. We ask the Holy Spirit to help us see and fulfill our true purpose. This practice leads us to remembering that Heaven is our Home eternally.

Stripping Away the Dream’s False Images

Sickness would prove that lies must be the truth. But healing demonstrates that truth is true. The separation sickness would impose has never really happened. To be healed is merely to accept what always was the simple truth, and always will remain exactly as it has forever been. Yet eyes accustomed to illusions must be shown that what they look upon is false. So healing, never needed by the truth, must demonstrate that sickness is not real.

Healing might thus be called a counter-dream, which cancels out the dream of sickness in the name of truth, but not in truth itself. Just as forgiveness overlooks all sins that never were accomplished, healing but removes illusions that have not occurred. Just as the real world will arise to take the place of what has never been at all, healing but offers restitution for imagined states and false ideas which dreams embroider into pictures of the truth. The world we experience as a body is a dream. It is the outward picture from the part of our mind that has chosen to believe separation is real. We need the images of the dream to convince ourselves that we live in a world of separation. But conviction does not make real when it is based on the denial of Reality. It covers over Reality with false images, making us unaware of the truth that we are one with all Love.

Healing could be likened to scraping off old wall paper that has covered a window to the real world. With the wall paper stripped away, the Light of the real world enlightens our mind and we see the brilliance of the Love of God in all things. With the illusions gone, we are free to step through the open window to our eternal reality in Love.
